Gottman Method Couples Therapy Online in New York, Florida, Connecticut and Vermont
If you arrived here from the Gottman Referral Network, you already know what you want. Gottman Method couples therapy with a Certified Gottman Therapist, not a therapist who read the books. The network is the primary resource for couples worldwide seeking professional help with verified training, and its database puts every credential on record. Mine is there.
I’m Travis Atkinson, LCSW, LICSW, a Certified Gottman Method Couples Therapist since 2006, with eight years at The Gottman Institute. I provide therapy online to couples in New York, Florida, Connecticut and Vermont.

Who is Gottman Method couples therapy with me for?
Many couples who find me through the referral network share one story. One of you has seen the trouble for years. Read the books. Named the pattern. Tried to be heard. The other solves hard problems all day, and everyone else’s problems get solved. Home is the exception.
Now the arguments are giving way to silence. One partner is afraid of losing this. The other is worn out from trying to save it. Knowing the pattern hasn’t changed it, and that gap is where my work begins.
My practice focuses on the harder cases: high-conflict and last-chance couples, affair recovery, intercultural couples, and neurodiverse relationships where ADHD, autism or OCPD shapes the conflict. Parenting, children, families, depression, trauma and emotional distance often ride along. If general couples counseling hasn’t moved your marriage, you likely need more specialized support from professionals trained in Gottman Method couples therapy, not a verdict on the marriage.
Where do you see couples?
Each of you can be in any of these four states during a session:
- New York. My practice is based in New York City, and most of my couples live in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
- Florida. I also practice from Fort Lauderdale and see couples across South Florida, from Palm Beach to Miami.
- Connecticut. Greenwich, Stamford and Fairfield County, plus the rest of the state.
- Vermont. Burlington to Manchester, including couples who summer or ski here.
Sessions continue when you go north for the summer or south for the winter. Bi-coastal families keep the same therapist all year, and children’s school calendars don’t interrupt the work.
What makes a Certified Gottman Therapist different?
Certified Gottman Therapists are licensed mental health professionals who completed all three levels of Gottman Institute training, then submitted recorded sessions with real couples for review. Most professionals who offer couples therapy never received training in it specifically. Gottman trained therapists did, and the GRN members listed there keep that certification current. Their research, training and case review are on record.
The Gottman Method comes from more than 40 years of research into strengthening relationships. In their Love Lab, Drs. John and Julie Gottman filmed real couples in conflict rather than theorizing about them. That science of love found that 69% of relationship conflicts are perpetual, so managing them beats winning them. It also identified the Four Horsemen. Criticism attacks a partner’s character rather than a behavior. Contempt treats a partner with disrespect, and it predicts divorce more than anything else. Defensiveness makes excuses, and stonewalling shuts down under physiological flooding.

What does Gottman Method couples therapy work on?
The Sound Relationship House, developed by John and Julie Gottman, is the theory behind Gottman Method couples therapy. It organizes the work into seven levels, with trust and commitment as the walls, and friendship and emotional connection as the foundation:
- Love Maps. Knowing your partner’s inner world, and updating it as life changes.
- Fondness and Admiration. Rebuilding appreciation and respect where contempt has crept in.
- Turning Toward. Answering small bids for connection instead of turning away.
- The Positive Perspective. A generally positive view of your partner and the relationship.
- Managing Conflict. Gentle start-ups instead of criticism, taking responsibility, and repair attempts that land. This is where the Gottman relationship building techniques do most of their work.
- Making Life Dreams Come True. Exploring the dreams behind each partner’s position in a gridlocked fight.
- Creating Shared Meaning. Rituals of connection and a shared sense of what your life together is for.
Healthy relationships and marriages aren’t conflict-free. They’re conflict-competent. In sessions, couples practice these communication techniques with me in the room and explore the roles each of them plays in the pattern. The aim is to disrupt the negative cycle before it disrupts them. Those techniques improve communication everywhere else too.
What happens in the first sessions?
I start with a thorough Gottman assessment, the same structure Gottman trained professionals use worldwide. It includes a joint session on the history of your relationship, one session with each of you, and detailed questionnaires. The fourth session is feedback on your relationship strengths, what sits underneath the fight, and where the cycle catches, followed by a plan you both agree to. Booking the first session doesn’t commit you to all four.
The one who has been carrying this stops carrying it alone. Meanwhile, the one who went quiet finds a way back in.
What happens after the assessment?
The fourth session ends with a plan, not a verdict. From there we move into active treatment, where the patterns named in the assessment get practiced in real time. A gentle start-up replaces criticism the moment it starts, and a repair attempt lands instead of stalling out. Each session builds on the last, and most couples notice movement within the first several weeks of that work.
Treatment isn’t open-ended. As the early pattern loosens, sessions shift from teaching new responses to reinforcing them. Then comes consolidation: making the new way of handling conflict durable enough to survive a bad week without a therapist in the room. Couples end treatment when the skills hold on their own, not when a therapist decides they’re finished.
Completion looks different for every couple. Some couples wrap up in a few months once the acute crisis lifts. Others, especially after long-standing patterns or an affair, work with me for longer to build something sturdier than what broke. Either way, the aim is the same: a relationship that runs without me in it.
How does online Gottman couples therapy work?
Sessions run 60 minutes on HIPAA-compliant Zoom, within the 50 to 90 minute range most Gottman therapists use. Most couples sit together on one screen, but each of you can join from your own device, as long as both of you are in one of the four states. Studies of couples therapy by video have generally found results comparable to in-person work, and busy couples keep online sessions more consistently. Every hour is with me, never an associate.

Why combine the Gottman Method with EFT and schema therapy?
The Gottman Method gives us precise tools for conflict, friendship, emotional connection and shared meaning. Underneath a stuck pattern there’s usually older emotional wiring, and that’s where Emotionally Focused Therapy and Schema Therapy for Couples come in. I use the three as one integrated approach, never as separate options. Schema therapy reaches the sensitivities each partner learned long before you met, the ones that make a late text feel like abandonment. Naming that chain changes what couples do at 11 p.m., and it’s how emotional intimacy returns.

How do I take the first step?
Pick a time that works for both of you. You’ll be meeting with me directly, not an intake coordinator. The first appointment begins a short assessment where I measure what’s already working in your relationship and where there’s room to grow. Booking it doesn’t commit you to the rest.

If you’re not sure I’m the right fit, the first session will show you. It shows me too.
Questions couples ask before booking
Do you take insurance?
I’m private-pay and don’t bill insurance directly. Many clients seek reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits, and I provide the documentation for that.
What if one of us is hesitant?
That’s common, and the skeptical partner often ends up valuing the structure most. The assessment gives both of you a fair hearing. Neither of you is the patient.
Does the Gottman Method work after an affair?
Yes, and the sequence matters: atonement, attunement, then attachment. We explore the trauma of the betrayal before rebuilding trust. Rebuilding closeness comes last, never first. There’s real hope here, and it takes time.
